Entry 002 · Outcome brief 2

Reading a results summary without getting lost

Many registered studies post a results summary once they finish. It looks like a wall of tables, but it follows the same order nearly every time.

Participant flow

The first table usually shows how many people started, how many finished and why some left. A study where many people stopped early can be harder to interpret.

Baseline characteristics

Next comes a description of the groups at the start: ages, sex and other details. It shows whether the groups were similar before anything was compared.

Outcome measures

Each endpoint gets its own table. Look for the measure, the time point and the number in each group. A statistical note may follow; it describes uncertainty, not certainty.

Adverse events

This section lists health events reported during the study, in every group. A listing here does not mean the product caused the event. That is a question for researchers and regulators.
